Chennai: Sales of gold and silver jewelry for the annual Akshaya Tritiya rose 30 percent on Tuesday compared to last year. Sales increased as jewelers, among others, offered discounts and free gifts for the purchase of jewelry, says Jayantilal J. Challani, Madras Jewelers & Diamond Merchants’ Association. A large number of buyers have reserved jewelry using pre-booking facilities.

A large number of people flocked to famous jewelry stores in T Nagar, Panagal Park, Valsaravakkam, Anna Nagar, Tambaram, Adyar, Pursaiwalkam, Sowarcarpet, Chromepet, Tiruvottiyur, Mylapore and Velachery to buy gold jewelry. They started reaching outlets from 6 a.m. on Tuesday and the stores remained open until midnight.

Four to five police officers were stationed in front of each point of sale to ensure security. Juice shops have sprung up in a number of places. As large numbers of people thronged the market, the traffic police struggled to regulate traffic in these places.

According to sources, 10g of 24k gold was sold for Rs 33,160 in February and Rs. 33,050 in March. There has been a drop of Rs 1,320 for 10g of 24k gold now.
